A mole crab emerita spp. Like other crabs, they “breathe” through gills and must have oxygenated water to live in. Emerita is the only continental North American genus of Hippidae.
These guys are hard to photograph because they keep burrowing into the sand just as the waves are receding.

I saw Gulf of Mexico as the range for Emerita benedicti, so I thought that ruled it out. Who knows, interesting though. On one scoop I made, there were maybe smaller crabs hanging on to a larger one.
