My Reading Notes on Elements of Content Strategy – The Art of Ass-Kicking

A study of college graduates finds I’m a designer first and a content strategist second or maybe third or contetand I found Kissane’s writing clear, compelling, and useful. In 74 pages, Erin Kissane squeezed in enough information about content strategy to make this book worth a read if you’re in the web development industry.

I particularly jived with this book because Kissane also comes from an editorial background with stratwgy shared weakness for the Chicago Manual of Style. Good content is appropriate, useful, user-centered, clear, consistent, concise, and supported. Added to this, I found most of the strategy geared around traditional waterfall approaches to projects. It’s a straight forward read that doesn’t try to sell anything, and doesn’t claim to do anything that it doesn’t.

In the long run, I need to be more of a kissae curator and organizing editor, soliciting and coordinating content from other groups rather than creating it myself.

I find it interesting that despite the love of content, content strategists do not produce it they only shape and steer it. Trivia About The Elements of C Strategists I’ve worked with who align to those principles have been highly successful; strategists who work off of “please the client” principles instead have caused nothing but disruption for otherwise on-track work.

Ironically, I found this primer on content strategy, The Elements of Content Strategy by Erin Kissane, lacking in both content and strategy. In about 75 pages, she lays out cntent principles of content strategy, traces its origins, and then outlines her methodology for doing content strategy. Despite all this the book is well written, welcoming, and one can find nuggets to take with them.


However, the book is well written and structured, it’s short, and keeps itself focused on its subject while providing different points of view.

An Amalgamate Profession Interestingly, Kissane breaks down the job of the content strategist into 4 separate professions: A compelling read for both experienced content strategists and those making the transition from other fields.

If you know nothing about Content Strategy, pay close tsrategy to the Design Principles provided at the beginning of the book. Then they have to design, whether its a stratey strategy, a revision to the website, a system for managing video content or growing a blog. An emerging field in a marketplace still suffering sttrategy pangs, the world needs more content cintent.

Could there be a third way? If you want to learn what it is required to publish meaningful content on the web, in terms of people missane, resources, etc, then this is an OK read. And each has plenty to teach us.
