Double Eagle is a rich book; I recommend it heartily. The storyline is rather straightforward, there were no huge surprises or plot twists, but character development was interesting and I liked how the climax was handled.

I remember feeling this way after one of the stories in Gaunt’s Ghosts, where they are fighting on Aexe Cardinal.

In those the enemy is clearly chaos and the setting is clearly 40k. On the whole feeling non-warhammery vibe you are talking about i feel you are missing a few important important points about 40K when looking at it, the Imperium is vast and complex, not every regiment in the galaxy treats its men as disposable cannon fodder and there are plenty of reasonable leaders out there that see their troopers as actual men and not numbers.

Most Warhammer novels are of the “short character development and then lots of red mist from exploding bodies” sort. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. As a lover of all things aircraft, I truly enjoyed reading about the exploits of these pilots.
